As pathognomonic ( Greek  παθογνωμονικός pathognomonikós 'characterizing a certain illness' or also pathognostic , Greek from πάθος pathos 'disease' and γιγνώσκω gignósko 'recognize, understand') one describes a symptom in medicine that is already sufficient for a safe alone Diagnosis is because it only occurs in one specific disease.

• The excretion of Bence-Jones proteins in plasmacytoma .
• The microscopically visible Auer rods are pathognomonic for acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
• The Kayser-Fleischer corneal ring is pathognomonic in the diagnosis of Wilson's disease (copper storage disease), although not every patient has this symptom.
• The pain of the lymph nodes after drinking alcohol in Hodgkin lymphoma .
