Since 2011 he has been chairman of the SPD in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district . From 2001 to the end of 2012 he was a member of the local council in Otzberg and has been a member of the district council of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district and the regional assembly of South Hesse since the local elections in 2011.

In the state elections in Hesse in 2008 on January 27, 2008, Koch ran for the constituency of Darmstadt-Dieburg II as a direct candidate and was able to prevail against the then Hessian Minister of Social Affairs, Silke Lautenschläger , the CDU candidate.

During the 17th state parliament election period, which lasted until the self-dissolution of the Hessian state parliament on November 19, 2008, Patrick Koch was a full member of the Interior Committee, the Petitions Committee and the second deputy member of the Main Committee. After reshuffling, he was also a full member of the Legal Affairs Committee and the Prison Subcommittee from November 2008.

At the same time, he took on the role of spokesman for police policy within the SPD parliamentary group.

Patrick Koch also took on responsibility in the governing body of the state parliament, in the so-called council of elders, as one of the secretaries.

Due to his membership in the main committee, which is also called the "standing committee" between the state parliament's dissolution and its reconstitution, Patrick Koch exercised the state parliament's control functions with the state government together with the other full members and elected deputies.

Patrick Koch achieved a significantly better personal result in the new elections on January 19, 2009 with 34.5% of the first votes than the second vote share of the SPD in the constituency (23.8%), but had to give up the direct mandate again to Silke Lautenschläger.

On August 18, 2013, Patrick Koch was elected the new mayor of Pfungstadt with 57.7% of the valid votes . The turnout was 47.42 percent.
