Paul Ammann

Paul Ammann (born August 31, 1634 in Breslau , † February 4, 1691 in Leipzig ) was a German medic and botanist .

Live and act

Ammann first studied medicine at the University of Leipzig before traveling to the Netherlands and England. After his return he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. In 1674 he became professor for botany in Leipzig and finally in 1682 for physiology. On April 27, 1664 Paul Ammann with the nickname Dryander I was accepted as a member ( matriculation no. 28 ) of the Academia Naturae Curiosorum , today's German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina .

Ammann was director of the Botanical Garden at the University of Leipzig , which was considered the most beautiful in Germany at the time. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University and was rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semester of 1668 and 1684 . Endowed with an astute mind, he was prone to viciously satirical criticism and had the ability to uncover the weaknesses of others without inhibition. In his " Character plantarum naturalis " he gave diagnoses for plant species for the first time, using the fruit as an essential characteristic. Regardless of this, he can be regarded as Linne's predecessor. His son, Johann Ammann, was also a botanist and described several types of plants.

Among his writings, the flora of Leipzig is particularly worth mentioning, which was published in 1675 under the title Supellex Botanica, hoc est: Enumeratio Plantarum, Quae non solum in Horto Medico Academiae Lipsiensis, sedetiam in aliis circa Urbem Viridariis, Pratis ac Sylvis & c. progerminare solent: cui Brevis accessit ad Materiam Medicam in usum Philiatrorum Manuductio appeared.

Honors

William Houstoun named the genus Ammannia of the Lythraceae (Lythraceae) plant family in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name.
