Paul Gerson Unna (born September 8, 1850 in Hamburg ; † January 29, 1929 there ) was a German dermatologist .

Life

Paul Gerson Unna was born into a Jewish family of doctors that had lived in Hamburg since the 17th century. He was the son of the Hamburg doctor Moritz Adolph Unna and brother of the portrait painter Julie de Boor (called Ploos van Amstel) and began to study medicine in Heidelberg, but interrupted it to fight in the Franco-Prussian War , in which he was seriously wounded . In 1871 he resumed his studies in Heidelberg, later went to Leipzig and finally did his doctorate with Heinrich Wilhelm Waldeyer in Strasbourg . His doctoral thesis Contributions to the anatomy and development history of the human epidermis and its appendages (University of Strasbourg 1875) on the histology and development history of the epidermis (Archive for Microscopic Anatomy, 1876) contained new ideas and perspectives, some of which met with decisive criticism, so that they only followed some corrections were adopted in 1875.

He received his dermatological training from 1876 in Vienna, where he worked with Ferdinand von Hebra , Moritz Kaposi and Heinrich Auspitz , among others .

After his return to Hamburg he worked first in his father's practice, then in the St. Georg hospital . Unna's main interest was dermatology. In 1881 he opened a general medical and dermatological practice in Hamburg. In 1884 he opened a private dermatology clinic in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel, which he called Dermatologicum and where he could concentrate entirely on his specialty. His book Histopathology of Skin Diseases , published in 1884, summarized the entire knowledge of skin diseases at the time and made him one of the leading dermatologists of his time. He described skin diseases and developed new therapies. His innovations include the use of ichthyol , which he reported on in the monthly notebooks for practical dermatology in 1882 and 1883 (each in the December issue), as well as resorcinol (from 1886) against skin diseases.

Unna researched the biochemical processes of the skin and was the first to describe the stratum granulosum . In 1894 he introduced layer projection as a method of skin examination.

In 1907 he coined the term Cutis verticis gyrata .

In 1907 the Hamburg Senate awarded him the title of professor, and in 1908 he became chief physician at Eppendorf Hospital . He worked closely with the pharmacist Paul Beiersdorf and his successor. In 1911 he supported the owner of the drug manufacturer Beiersdorf , Oscar Troplowitz, together with the chemist Isaac Lifschütz in developing a skin cream. Nivea was launched a year later as the world's first skin cream . The recipe has remained almost unchanged to this day. After the University of Hamburg was founded in 1919, he became a professor there and was given the first chair in dermatology.

In 1927 he first described Unna's disease ( seborrheic eczema ).

Unna's three sons - Karl, Paul Junior and Georg Wilhelm - were also dermatologists, his son Eugen was a pharmacist.

On the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg there is a granite monument to Paul Gerson Unna at grid square T 21 (southeast of Chapel 2).

In Eimsbüttel , the Unnapark bears his name, as does Unnastraße, where Beiersdorf AG has its corporate headquarters.
