Major General Paul J. Mueller

Paul John Mueller (born November 6, 1892 in Union , Missouri , † September 25, 1964 in Washington, DC ) was a general in the US Army during World War II .

Mueller graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1915. During World War I , he mainly commanded infantry battalions on the Western Front . Between the two world wars he held various positions in the army, mostly as an instructor in infantry schools or as a commander of various units.

In August 1941 he became the commanding general of the 81st Infantry Division at Fort Rucker , Alabama . In the months to come, he led the division to various training sessions in the states of Florida , Tennessee and California . He experienced his first combat mission in the Pacific War with his division from September 1944 on the Palau Islands Angaur and especially Peleliu , where he came to the aid of the hard-fighting 1st US Marine Division under General William H. Rupertus . Under his leadership, the Wildcat Division ended this battle in November. With the capitulation of Japan , he participated with his 81st division in the occupation of Japan.

Mueller remained in the US Army until his retirement in 1954. He died in 1964.
