Paul Mitzschke

Paul Gottfried Mitzschke (born August 19, 1853 in Naumburg (Saale) , † September 25, 1920 in Weimar ) was a German archivist and historian.

Live and act

Paul Gottfried Mitzschke was born on August 19, 1853 as the son of the first cathedral preacher August Mitzschke and Marie Mitzschke, née Niese, in Naumburg an der Saale. He attended the Domgymnasium Naumburg from 1864 to 1871 . He then studied philology and history at the University of Rostock , where he received his doctorate in 1875. In the same year he became an assistant teacher at the Andreas Institute in Sulza and in 1876 a high school teacher in Fürstenwalde. From 1877 to 1896 he worked as an archivist in the Thuringian Secret Main and State Archives in Weimar. On January 24, 1882, he married Laura Hörner. According to a public advertisement from 1898, Paul Mitzschke became engaged to Ellen Wintzer, who was born in London in 1857 and was a columnist (journalistic reporter) and a translator of English, French and Italian. The date of their marriage is not known. Paul Mitzschke died in Weimar on September 25, 1920.

Mitzschke published early works on the history of Thuringia and his hometown Naumburg and places in the immediate vicinity. In 1896 he was the founder of the Thuringian Archive Day. In 1904, together with his wife, he published a 152-page book entitled “The treasure of sagas of the city of Weimar and its surroundings”. Paul Mitzschke was the editor of the messages from the Mitzschke Family Association .
