Paul Struye

Paul Victor Antoine Struye (born September 1, 1896 in Ghent ; † February 16, 1974 in Ixelles / Elsene ) was a Belgian legal scholar , university professor , politician of the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP) - Parti Social Chrétien (PSC) and two-time long-term President of the Senate .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and was after the promotion for law doctorate as a university professor at the Catholic University of Leuven operates.

He began his political career in 1936 when he was elected a member of the local council ( Gemeenteraad ) of Elsene. He was a member first until 1938 and then again from 1945 to 1959. In 1946 he was elected senator and as such represented the constituency of Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde until 1973 . 1952-1958 he was a member of the European Parliament.

On March 20, 1947, Struye was appointed Minister of Justice in the government of Prime Minister Paul-Henri Spaak and was a member of this until November 27, 1948.

On June 27, 1950, he became President of the Senate for the first time and held this position until March 12, 1954. On June 24, 1958, he was again President of the Senate and finally held this office until he left the Senate on October 5, 1973 .

On December 23, 1958, he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State ( Ministre d'Etat ) along with a few other people .
