Paul Walter Prince

Paul Walter Fürst (born April 25, 1926 in Vienna ; † February 28, 2013 ) was an Austrian musician and composer . In addition, since 1998 he was President of the State Authorized Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers (AKM) and for many years managing director and president of the Austrian Society of Interpreters (OESTIG). Furthermore, Fürst was principal violist with the Niederösterreichische Tonkünstler (1952–1954), with the Munich Philharmonic (1954–1961) and from 1961 to 1990 he played in the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and from 1962 with the Vienna Philharmonic .

Life

Paul Walter Fürst was born on April 25, 1926 in Vienna as the son of the lawyer Rudolf Fürst and his wife Anna. In his childhood he first learned violin and piano, played in the children's orchestra and took part in various competitions.

He attended the Musisches Gymnasium in Frankfurt / Main, where Fürst completed his training in tuba, trombone, score playing and in rhythm and ear training. He also took part in the school choir. He made his first contact with composing through the director of the grammar school, Kurt Thomas , who taught him the basics of composing. The acquaintance with Hugo Distler and his works aroused in him the ultimate desire to compose.

Paul Walter Fürst returned to Vienna in 1945 and one year later studied violin ( Willi Boskovsky ), piano (Hermann Schwermann), harmony ( Joseph Marx ) and improvisation at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . At the same time he had occasional lessons in composition from Alfred Uhl .

After successfully completing his studies in 1952, he became principal violist in the same year until 1954 with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria and in the following years in the Munich Philharmonic (1954–1961) and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra (1961–1990). From 1969 to 1982 and 1984 to 1990 he was Managing Director of the Vienna Philharmonic. Until his death he held many offices, including President of OESTIG and AKM.

On the evening of February 28, 2013, after a short illness, Fürst died of cancer at the age of 86.
