Paul von Winterfeld
Paul von Winterfeld (born August 20, 1872 in Tynwalde , West Prussia , † April 4, 1905 in Belzig ) was a German university professor and co-founder of Middle Latin Philology and employee of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica.
Along with the older Wilhelm Meyer from Speyer and Ludwig Traube, he was one of the founders of Middle Latin philology and collaborator of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica . His main field of work was the Latin poetry of the Middle Ages, including the edition of the works of Hrotsvith von Gandersheim , with which he had been concerned since December 1890.
Life
After graduating from high school in Köslin in 1890, Winterfeld began studying in Berlin. He heard medieval history from Wilhelm Wattenbach , Classical Philology bei Vahlen , who accepted Winterfeld in 1891 in the Philological Seminar, which had been founded by August Boeckh in 1812 and which served the interpretation, disputation of classical authors and the practice in the preparation of Latin treatises and therefore only in Latin language discussed. In 1895 he received his doctorate and in 1899 his habilitation as a private lecturer in classical philology. Appointed associate professor at Berlin University in 1904, the researcher died in 1905 of a lung disease in the Belzig sanatorium.
His attempts to get in touch with Agnes Miegel , whose poems had impressed him very much, were unsuccessful, but he appointed her and Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff as heirs in his will. However, both of them waived in favor of Winterfeld's sister, and the scholar's library was sold and dispersed.
