Paula Strasberg (* 1909 in New York as Paula Miller ; † April 29, 1966 there ) was an American acting teacher and actress .

life and career

Paula Miller was born into a Jewish family in New York. Between 1928 and 1948 she appeared in over twenty Broadway plays, which made her a successful actress. On the other hand, she should never act in a film. In 1934 she married the acting teacher Lee Strasberg , who is considered the founder of method acting . He founded the Actors Studio , where his wife also taught as a teacher. For example, she was the acting coach of Marilyn Monroe , who accompanied her on filming until her death in 1962, for example in the fall of 1958 for Some Like It Hot . Tony Curtis , who starred in the film alongside Monroe, had bad memories of Paula Strasberg:

“She [Marilyn Monroe] was with Paula Strasberg. Paula Strasberg was about five feet tall, quite stocky, dressed all in black and wore a black umbrella (...) Every time Marilyn spoke to [director] Billy Wilder , Paula stood right next to him and made suggestions. (...) In my opinion, Marilyn was cupped and abused - I mean abuse in the sense that she harnessed her for her own purposes. (...) Paula Strasberg got $ 1,500 a week and did nothing more than run after Marilyn Monroe. "

Paula Strasberg had two children who also became actors: Susan Strasberg (1938–1999) and John Strasberg (* 1942) had successful careers in the theater, Susan also starred in films. Paula Strasberg died of cancer in 1966. She is buried in Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson near New York.

In the 2011 film My Week with Marilyn , Strasberg is played by Zoë Wanamaker .
