Sir Paulias Nguna Matane GCMG , OBE (born September 21, 1931 in East New Britain Province ) is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was Governor General of Papua New Guinea from June 29, 2004 to December 13, 2010 .

Paulias Matane was elected Governor General by the parliament of Papua New Guinea with 50 votes on May 27, 2004 , and was thus the representative of Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Pato Kakeraya , his opponent, received 46 votes. The election of the governor general had failed six months earlier due to formal errors in the nomination process. Although Matane was sworn in, the controversy persisted as Kakeraya filed a motion to the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea to annul the elections, which was rejected.

Matane is a Tolai from the province of East New Britain , speaks Kuanua Language and priests of the United Church in Papua New Guinea . He has written many books in English that is intentionally kept extremely simple in order to convince his readers in Papua New Guinea that books are a useful source of information and that books should not be viewed as just something made only for foreigners . From 1975 to 1980 Paulias Matane was Papua New Guinea's ambassador to the USA . He founded the United News Agency of Melanesia . For many years, Matane had an advisory column in the Malay newspaper The National .

In 2010, Matane was re-elected under controversial circumstances; the election was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in December 2010.
