Paulo César Wanchope Watson (born July 31, 1976 in Heredia ) is a Costa Rican soccer coach and former player . At the 2014 World Cup , he coached the Costa Rican national team on an interim basis . He is also an English citizen .

Wanchope began his career with CS Herediano in Costa Rica. In 1997 he moved to England for Derby County , where he scored 28 goals in 79 games, in 1999 he was finally signed by West Ham United . Although he scored 15 goals in 46 games in his first season, he was subsequently transferred to Manchester City . He had a regular place at City and rose with the club in 2002 in the FA Premier League . In 2004, Wanchope was sold to Malaga FC in Spain for £ 500,000 . There he stayed for one season in which he scored the goal of the year in Spain, before moving to the Qatar Stars League at Al-Gharafa changed. Due to Costa Rica's participation in the World Cup, he moved back to Herediano in his home country in January 2006 in order to better prepare for the upcoming tournament with the national team. After the World Cup, he moved to Argentina to Rosario Central . On December 29, 2006, he announced his move to the Japanese J-League for FC Tokyo . On November 16, 2007, Paulo Wanchope ended his active career due to knee problems. Most recently he was under contract with Chicago Fire .
National team
Wanchope played a central role in the Costa Rican national soccer team . The striker scored 45 goals in 71 games . With his 43rd goal in the 3-0 World Cup qualifier against the USA on October 8, 2005, he was the record scorer of the Costa Rican national team. His greatest successes with the national team were participation in the 2002 World Cup and second place in the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup . He was also an important player in his team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and scored both goals for Costa Rica in the opening game against host Germany in Munich . He had already scored another World Cup goal at the 2002 World Cup in a 5-2 draw against eventual world champions Brazil.
From September 2011 to 2014 he was the assistant coach of the Costa Rican national soccer team. He then became national coach and also led the team during the 2014 World Cup .
