Peder Palladius

Peder Palladius (* 1503 in Ribe ; † January 3, 1560 in Copenhagen ) was a Lutheran theologian and reformer of Denmark .

Life

Palladius first worked as the principal of the Latin school in Odense . In 1531 he went to Wittenberg to study theology and studied with Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon . In 1533 he acquired his master's degree and in 1537 received his doctorate in theology . He then returned to Denmark, where he was ordered by King Christian III. was ordained by Johannes Bugenhagen as the first bishop of Zealand (Sjælland) and thus a primate of the Danish Church . At the University of Copenhagen , which was reorganized by Bugenhagen , Palladius taught at the same time as professor of theology and served twice as rector. As a bishop he worked mainly through visitations and the establishment of an evangelical school system. Through his translations of the works of Luther and other Wittenbergers into Danish and his participation in the first complete translation of the Bible, he became important for the entire Lutheran Church in Denmark .
