Pelham is a city on the southern tip of Westchester County in the US state of New York . It borders directly on the New York Bronx , is 2.2 square miles (5.7 km²) in size and had a population of 11,866 in 2000, of which 87.33% were white. There are two towns in the city, Pelham in the middle and Pelham Manor in the south. It is named after a certain Pelham Burton .
history
Pelham is the oldest town in Westchester County. Its foundation goes back to a contract of 1654, according to which the doctor Thomas Pell bought the land between the Bronx River and the present area of Rye from a local Indian tribe and named Pelham in honor of his teacher Pelham Burton . Until the American War of Independence , the place was the only residence of the Pell family.
On October 18, 1776, a battle between the British and the Americans took place in what is now the municipality , after William Howe landed there in mid-October with British-Hessian units . The battle is in the context of the capture of New York by the English in October 1776.
On March 7, 1788, the town of Pelham was officially founded on Pells Land. In 1895 it was reduced to the current metropolitan area and the area southwest of its boundaries was added to New York City . In the rest of the area there remained a total of three localities, North Pelham , Pelham and Pelham Manor. In 1975 North Pelham was incorporated into Pelham.
The name Pelham is still used in the names of some neighborhoods and a subway route on the New York side.

Pelham is touched by two motorways. The Interstate 95 leads south and east to the municipal area around the west runs Hutchinson River Parkway north.
The tracks of the north-east corridor run parallel to Interstate 95 . The New Haven Line of the Metro-North Railroad runs from west to east through the middle of the municipality and directly through the town of Pelham, before it joins the north-east corridor to the north. Pelham Station is located in the town of the same name on the New Haven Line. It is served by local trains to New Haven and Grand Central Station . Both routes were once part of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad network .
The New York, Westchester and Boston Railway ran about 500 meters north of the New Haven Line between 1912 and 1937 . The rapid transit system served two stations in Pelham area, Fifth Avenue and Pelhamwood . After the bank went bankrupt, the tracks and stations were dismantled. Over time, the railway embankment was built with residential houses; the bridge over Highbrook Avenue remains.
