Personal Unblocking Key

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Personal Unblocking Key ( PUK , often also SuperPIN ) is an electronic key that is used to unblock a chip card after a PIN has been entered incorrectly several times. Examples of such chip cards are SIM cards or the German identity card with eID function.

SIM card

With a SIM card , the PUK is used for unlocking if the personal identification number (PIN) has been entered incorrectly several times, usually three times in a row. The PUK is not stored in the mobile phone , but is tied to the SIM card and can be obtained from the manufacturer. The PUK usually has eight digits.

The PUK must not be entered incorrectly any number of times. After eight to ten failed attempts, the SIM card is irrevocably blocked. A new SIM card must then be requested from the network operator. This may involve costs and waiting time.

While the PUK is used to unblock the PIN, the PUK2 is used to unblock the PIN2.

Identity card in Germany

If the eID function is used with the new German ID card , if the PIN is entered incorrectly three times, a block occurs that can be lifted with the PUK. Bundesdruckerei sends the PUK together with the PIN in a special letter and can be used a maximum of ten times.
