Peter Louis "Pete" Pihos (born October 22, 1923 in Orlando , Florida , † August 16, 2011 in Winston-Salem , North Carolina ), nickname : "Big Dog" , was an American American football player . Among other things, he played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL).

youth

Pihos' family originally immigrated to the United States from Greece . He grew up and attended high school in Chicago after his family moved from Florida . His father was murdered, and Pihos decided to study law after high school after a suspect had been acquitted. Shortly before he graduated, he abandoned his plan and graduated in business administration. Due to his athletic abilities, nothing stood in the way of a sports career.

Career

college

Pihos received a scholarship from Indiana University in 1942 and played for the Indiana Hoosiers mainly in the position of a defensive end , but was also used at times as a wide receiver and fullback . In 1943 he was drafted into the US Army and only returned to his old college after the Second World War in 1945 . Until his graduation in 1946, he was usually served as a team captain as a fullback, since he had already been signed by the Philadelphia Eagles a year earlier , his path to becoming a professional footballer was mapped out.

NFL

Pihos was selected by the Eagles in the 1945 NFL Draft in the fifth round in 41st place. Pihos only joined the Philadelphia team after completing his studies in 1947 . At the Eagles, Pihos was used exclusively as a wide receiver and developed into one of the best players in this position. Under Head Coach Greasy Neale , Pihos won the NFL championship twice - in 1948 against the Chicago Cardinals 7-0 and in 1949 with quarterback Tommy Thompson against the Los Angeles Rams 14-0. In the second game Pihos was able to score a touchdown on Thompson's pass.

Pihos set several season bests in the NFL. 1953 to 1955 he caught the most passes in the league and was able to achieve the most touchdowns in a season in 1953 with ten. In 1953 and 1955 he scored the most yards of any wide receiver. In 1955, after 107 games, Pihos gave up his NFL career, in which he only missed one game. As a wide receiver, he scored 61 touchdowns in his NFL career.

Honors (selection)

Pihos played six Pro Bowl times and was elected to the All-Pro team eight times by the American press . He was a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the College Football Hall of Fame , the National Football League 1940s All-Decade Team, and the Eagles Hall of Fame .

After the career

Pihos worked in business after his playing career. He was married and had five children. Pihos suffered from Alzheimer's disease , from the consequences of which he died on August 16, 2011. He is buried in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Winston-Salem.
