Peter Alter

Peter Alter (born July 22, 1940 in Parchim ) is a German historian .

Alter received his doctorate in 1970 at the University of Cologne and habilitated there in 1981. He taught European and contemporary history at the Universities of Cologne, Freiburg , Cambridge and Sussex . He is a specialist in nationalism, the 20th century and the history of Great Britain. From 1976 to 1994 he was research assistant and later deputy director of the German Historical Institute in London . From 1994 to 2005 he taught as professor for modern and contemporary history at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
