Peter Beil
Peter Beil , actually Tom Karrasch (born July 9, 1937 in Hamburg ; † April 13, 2007 there ), was a German pop singer , trumpeter, composer and band leader.
Life
Peter Beil took violin lessons as a 12-year-old . He also played in the trombone choir , where he discovered the trumpet for himself. After finishing school, he first did a commercial apprenticeship. He later worked as an employee at Hamburg Airport . Finally he studied classical trumpet at the State Music Academy. He performed at parties on weekends with a college friend. Over time, the group expanded to six members and called itself "Crazy Combo". The lead singer was Peter Beil. In 1958 the band was able to appear in Peter Frankenfeld's show "Toi, Toi, Toi". Then Peter Beil got a record deal with the Fontana label, a subsidiary of Philips . However, the first recordings were not very successful. His breakthrough came in the spring of 1961 with the German recording of the Ray Peterson hit Corinna, Corinna . This song stayed in the German charts for weeks. At the same time his German version of the Ricky Nelson hit Hello Mary Lou was published under the pseudonym Ricky Boys , in which he himself sang the second voice.
In the following year, Peter Beil was able to qualify for the German Schlager Festival in Baden-Baden with the title An Italian in Love , but only ended up in last place there. The Ricky Boys project was also pursued, this time with Franco Duval as a singing partner. Peter Beil also appeared in two hit films . With his title Carolin-Carolina he appeared in the 1962 film Tanze mit mir in den Morgen and with Tonight (El Cóndor Pasa) he appeared in 1970 in the film Musik, Musik - the penne wobbles with you.
Until well into the 1960s, Beil successfully recorded German cover versions of American songs, including Und dein Zugfahrt durch die Nacht (Original: 500 miles from home ), which in Germany was mainly in the French version J'entends sung by Richard Anthony siffler le train became known. In 1965, Beil took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . His contribution Nur aus Liebe landed with zero points in one of the last three places among the total of six participants.
In 1966 Peter Beil switched to the record company CBS , where he had another great success with Fremde in der Nacht , the German version of the Frank Sinatra hit Strangers in the Night . Another attempt to participate in the German Schlager Festival in 1966 with I want to go there failed. In 1970 Peter Beil was featured in one of the first editions of the ZDF hit parade with the title The lightning strike and took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest with blue eyes, red lips and auburn hair , but only achieved that with zero points last place of the six participants. Nevertheless, he had many successful singles in the following years with titles like you, me, the two of us , question about love or a girl to fall in love with . By the end of the 1970s, he was also the musical director of the hit parade tour with Dieter Thomas Heck .
In addition to his own recordings, he also composed for other artists. In 1984 he finally joined the Hazy Osterwald Sextet as a trumpeter. After that he was occasionally seen and heard as a choir singer with various artists.
Peter Beil is the father of the presenter and actress Caroline Beil , whose mother, Barbara Kalweit, Miss Hamburg 1964, he met at the subsequent Miss Germany elections in Berlin and married in 1966. He died of lung cancer in 2007 and was buried in the Altona cemetery in Hamburg.
