Peter Benoit

Peter Leonardus Benoit (born August 17, 1834 in Harelbeke , † March 8, 1901 in Antwerp ) was a Belgian composer .

Life

Peter Benoit studied music at the Brussels Conservatory from 1851 to 1855 and from then on worked as a conductor (Park Theater) and composer, in particular for stage works and cantatas . In 1857 he was awarded the Prix ​​de Rome for his cantata Le Meurtre d'Abel . From 1858 he stayed in Germany for a long time (Cologne, Bonn, Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, Munich). In 1861 he was appointed orchestra leader at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens . In 1867 he was appointed director of the Flemish School of Music (Vlaamsche Muziekschool) Antwerp, which received the status of a State Conservatory in 1898 and was henceforth called the Royal Conservatory .

Although Benoit mentioned Freemasons and the Grand Orient de France in Pour Don Carlos , he was not a Freemason himself.

He is buried in the Schoonselhof cemetery in Antwerp.
