Peter Casagrande (born February 23, 1946 in Weilheim ) is a German painter . He lives and works in Maitenbeth , 40 km east of Munich , in the Allgäu and in Genoa.

After an apprenticeship as a sign painter (1960 to 1963), Peter Casagrande studied from 1970 to 1972 and from 1979 to 1980 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , with Rudi Tröger and from 1972 to 1975 at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin. In 1979 he founded the artist collective “Maitenbeth”.

In 1983 he received an annual scholarship from the city of Munich and the state sponsorship award of the state of Bavaria.

Casagrande's painting is based on a gestural-informal approach. The creation itself is an essential part of Peter Casagrande's understanding of art. His predominantly large-format pictures are created in an uninhibited painting process in which painting actions with large-area color gradients are superimposed in many layers. The picture develops step by step from the picture ground upwards. The traces of paint underneath remain visible and push back onto the surface of the picture above, the picture thus reminds of its own creation.

The longer you look at Casagrande's paintings, the more the usual spatial conception is put into perspective. Casagrande strips the room of any representationality and lets it arise solely through color and overlaying the painted structures. Quote: “Space has always been my topic from the beginning.
