Self-Portrait (1830)

Peter Fendi (born September 4, 1796 in Vienna ; † August 28, 1842 there ) was an Austrian portrait and genre painter , watercolorist , lithographer and engraver of the Biedermeier period .

Life

Peter Fendi came from a poor background and was the son of the teacher Joseph Fendi and his wife Elisabeth Schäffer. When Fendi fell from the changing table , he suffered a spinal injury, which resulted in his ailing constitution. 1810–1813 he attended the k. k. Drawing academy, where he was a student of Johann Baptist Lampi . After the death of his father, Peter Fendi provided for his and his mother's livelihood with paperwork in a law firm.

Through the mediation of the art collector Joseph Barth , Fendi came into contact with the President of the Academy , Count Anton Lamberg-Sprinzenstein. This gave him the order to copy his collection of antique vases. In 1818 Fendi became a draftsman for the Münz- und Antikenkabinett. With its director Anton von Steinbüchel , Fendi made a study trip to Salzburg and Venice.

Fendi frequented Caroline Pichler's salon and began to gather a small group of painting students (including Carl Schindler , Albert Schindler , Johann Friedrich Treml , Rudolf Gaupmann and Johann Baptist Staudinger ). The new director of the Münz- und Antikenkabinett, Moritz Graf Dietrichstein, recommended Fendi at court from 1833, where he won the favor of Empress Karolina Augusta and Archduchess Sophie. He became a drawing teacher at the court and created portraits of children and watercolors. In 1836 Fendi became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . Since the late 1830s he was one of the most sought-after portraitists of the Viennese aristocracy. At the end of his life he devoted himself preferentially to the education of his favorite students. Fendi was buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof in Vienna. In 1909 he was given a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 A, number 43).

power

Peter Fendi left behind an extremely extensive work. He created over 2000 sheets with copies of ancient works of art from private and state collections in Vienna. As a lithographer he was a pioneer with his attempts to print in multiple colors. As a portrait and genre painter, he was the founder of this genre in the Viennese Biedermeier period and, along with Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and Josef Danhauser, is one of the most important artists of the time. His works reflect the Biedermeier attitude towards life and are extremely lyrical and charming. His approx. 400 watercolors, which are among the best and most important of their kind in 19th century Austria, are also very popular. Fendi finally made the designs for the 5, 10 and 100 guilder banknotes issued by the Austrian state in 1841.

Erotic watercolors

Forty watercolors with an erotic content, traditionally attributed to Peter Fendi, are well known. But they are clearly not his. In 1910 the printed work Forty Erotic Watercolors was published in facsimile production , the originals of which were supposed to come from Fendi and have since been wrongly ascribed to him.

Honors

  • In 1875, Fendigasse in Vienna was named after the artist.
  • In 1996 a special stamp was issued by the Austrian Post for his 200th birthday (Michel 2181). A stamp with a motif based on a painting by Peter Fendi had already appeared on Mother's Day 1967 (Michel 1237).
