Peter Funke

Peter Funke (born March 18, 1950 in Rheine ) is a German ancient historian .

Peter Funke studied history and German at the University of Münster from 1969 to 1974 . From 1975 to 1978 he was the administrator of a scientific assistant position in the ancient history department of the Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Cologne . In 1978 he completed his doctorate at the University of Cologne. The dissertation dealt with late classical Athens and was published in 1980. This was followed by work as a research assistant at the Institute for Classical Studies / Ancient History Department in Cologne until 1985. From 1979 to 1981 Funke also represented Ancient History at the University of Siegen . In 1985, with the study of investigations into the history and structure of the Aitolian Federation, the habilitation in Ancient History at the University of Cologne took place. The work remained unpublished. Funke then taught as a C3 professor at the University of Siegen until 1988, and then as a full professor at the University of Münster from 1988 to 2018 . In addition, he was the head of the research center “ Historical Regional Studies of Ancient Greece ” and from 1991 to 2004 of the “Greece Workplace” in the Department of Ancient History. From 1990 to 1994 Funke was Vice Rector for Teaching and Student Affairs in Münster. In 1999 Peter Funke turned down an offer for a professorship at the University of Munich . After the 2018 summer semester, Funke retired, but remained associated with the university as a senior professor . His successor in Münster was Hans Beck .

Funke's main research areas are the history of the Greek world from the Mycenaean to the Roman period, Greek historiography , ancient constitutional history , ancient regional studies and historical geography . In addition, he is dedicated to the ancient constitutional history and the relationship between religion and rule in antiquity. Within the Excellence Initiative, he worked on the role of cults and shrines in ancient treaties at the Münster Cluster of Excellence Religion and Politics .

Funke was, among others, Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Muenster and Chairman of the Joint Study Reform Commission of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Working Group New Media in university teaching of the German Rectors' Conference . Since 1993 Funke has been a liaison professor at the Cusanuswerk , of which he also headed the advisory board. Since 2003 he has been a member of the “Humanities Working Group” of the Science Council.

In the German Research Foundation (DFG) , Peter Funke was expert reviewer for ancient history and deputy chairman of the specialist committee on ancient studies from 1996 to 2004, and from 2004 to 2005 spokesman for the specialist committee for ancient cultures . Since 1995 he has been in close contact with scientists from all disciplines as DFG Liaison Lecturer at the University of Münster. Since 2005 he has been a member of the Senate and Main Committee as well as the Senate Committee on Research Perspectives . Since 2010 he has been Vice President of the DFG for the humanities department.

Funke had been a member of the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute for many years since 1988 and a full member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1989. In 1997, the International Academy of Pedagogical Sciences in Moscow elected him a member. Since 2007 he has been the project manager of Inscriptiones Graecae . He was also a member of the board and acting managing director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Cyprus Studies at the University of Münster. In 2011 he became one of the editors of the ancient history journal Klio . Since 2009 Funke has been a board member of the "European Research Center for Ancient Eastern Mediterranean Cultures" (CAMC), which was founded as a consortium of the universities of Tartu, Münster and Helsinki and is based in Tartu, Estonia.

Funke held several functions in the Association of Historians in Germany . From 1990 to 1992 he was a representative for ancient history in the association's committee, from 1992 to 2000 he was vice chairman and from 2004 to 2008 first chairman of the association. In 2019, Funke was awarded the Ausonius Prize of the University of Trier .
