Life

The doctor of German studies, who studied in Hamburg, Bonn and Amsterdam, has lived in Berlin since 1971 . On July 14, 1977, he founded the publishing house Das Arsenal in West Berlin , which, depending on the source, he understands as the “armory of the Enlightenment” or “armory for the minds”. Together with his wife, he has published around sixty books so far, six to nine “wonderfully simple books, thread-stitched and English brochures , supplemented by unusual and delicate sketches” per year. The publisher's program focuses on Jewish , Jewish-German and essayistic literature, the metropolitan features section , art, film and art criticism.

Moses-Krause sees himself as a political publisher with a left-wing past. According to taz , he is said to have belonged to a Maoist K group when he was younger . The claim to intervene in politics with literature was then "quickly destroyed", "but I still bring out literature that I consider political - only the political is more hidden today," says Moses-Krause.

Moses-Krause, who only publishes books that interest him, publishes only a few contemporary authors besides the Alsatian Claude Vigée and Christine Wolter . Among the deceased, mostly Jewish authors, whose texts Moses-Krause made accessible again, include the journalist and writer Victor Auburtin , of whom a work is being published, the film critics Béla Balázs and Siegfried Kracauer , the Hungarian narrator Tibor Déry , the journalist and literary scholar Arthur Eloesser and the writer and flaneur Franz Hessel .

Moses-Krause is an assimilated Jew, for whom “the Christmas tree is a matter of course” at Christmas . He was involved in the Berlin Jewish Group and the Jewish Round Table . He explains his whereabouts in Germany, the “land of murderers” in the Jewish reading:

“I see my place here in Germany and will not leave a few neo-Nazis. Doubts as to whether Jewish communities can and should exist in Germany have always existed since the Second World War. To put it bluntly, the question is: Is it right for Jews to live in the land of murderers? Everyone has to ask themselves this question at some point and answer it for themselves. Even if the decision can never be final, I am determined to defend my position in Germany. "
