Peter Rowan (born July 4, 1942 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American bluegrass musician and songwriter. He can look back on a long career as a soloist and member of various bands, including Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys .

Life

Beginnings

Characterized by a favorable family environment - his parents and several relatives were musicians - Peter Rowan learned to play the guitar at an early age . As a schoolboy he gained his first experience in various bands. The Tex-Mex group The Cupids , which he founded in high school, was remarkably successful in the Boston area and released a single.

In 1963 he dropped out of college to become a professional musician. He initially joined the Mother Bay State Entertainers as a mandolin player and singer . On the mediation of Bill Keith , with whom he had played several times before, he was hired by Bill Monroe for his backing band, the Bluegrass Boys .

Career

In 1967 he separated from Bill Monroe and together with David Grisman founded the band Earth Opera , which recorded several albums and was also known as the opening act for the Doors . During these years he worked increasingly as a songwriter . His best-known title was Panama Red , created in 1969 . In 1972 he joined the folk / rock group Seatrain , whose records were produced by George Martin .

In 1973 he became a member of Jerry Garcia's bluegrass band Old and in the Way , in which his old companion David Grisman also played. A year later he founded the group Muleskinner with Clarence White , David Grisman, and Richard Greene , which also only existed for a short time.

In the 1980s, Rowan worked with Flaco Jimenez several times . In 1983 he founded the band Wild Stallions in Nashville . With his brothers Chris and Lorin he worked several times under the name The Rowans on joint projects. Three albums were released between 1975 and 1977. In the following years he played with numerous well-known bluegrass musicians, including Jerry Douglas and Tony Rice . He also brought out several solo albums in which he covered a wide range of musical styles. In 2001 he released the album "Reggaebilly", on which melancholy country sounds and fiddle music were underlaid with a reggae rhythm.

In 2002 he recorded the album High Lonesome Cowboy with Don Edwards , which was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Traditional Folk Album in 2003 . In September 2010 "Legacy" was released, a collection of mainly his own songs, with which Rowan returned to his bluegrass roots.
