Peter Schöttel (born March 26, 1967 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian football player . With a few years of exception, Schöttel had been with SK Rapid Vienna since 1986 and was a trainer there from November 2011 to April 2013 . He has been the sports director of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) since October 2017 .

Player career

Until 2007 he had never changed clubs, although it is very likely that he had several offers from abroad that were financially more lucrative than at Rapid . He said in an interview that his dream would be to turn down an offer from Real Madrid .

He played 1986-2001 at Rapid (1997-2001 as captain ) and came to a total of 527 competitive appearances (436 championship , 39 Cup , 2 ÖFB Super Cup , 50 European Cup ). He holds the record for most championship games by a player at SK Rapid Wien. In total, he only scored 6 goals (4 championship, 2 European Cup), which is relatively few even for a Libero .

Because of his loyalty to the club, he enjoys cult status with Rapid fans. His fans call him the “ football god ” and his number 5 was banned by Rapid for 10 years after the end of his active career until 2011, but was only given again in the summer of 2013 to Thanos Petsos .

With the Austrian national soccer team , Peter Schöttel took part in two world championships (1990, 1998). He played a total of 63 international matches.

Trainer, functionary

2001–2002 Schöttel was the youth leader and trainer of the Rapid Amateurs. Since 2003 he has held the position of sports manager. On November 11, 2006, Schöttel announced that, after continuing criticism of his work, he would resign from his position at Rapid by the end of 2006 at the latest. In 2007 Schöttel took over the coaching position at the Vienna Sports Club for one season. From June 2009 he held the position of manager at First Vienna FC. Schöttel also works as a TV analyst for ORF and Sky Sport Austria .

From December 14, 2009 to May 2011, he was the coach and sports director of the Austrian Bundesliga club SC Magna Wiener Neustadt .

From the beginning of the 2011/2012 season to April 2013, Schöttel was the coach of SK Rapid Vienna .

In the summer of 2015, Schöttel hired SV Grödig . After relegation to Regionalliga West , he announced his resignation before the last game against SV Mattersburg , as his contract, which lasted until 2017, only applied to the Bundesliga .

On August 1, 2017, he was appointed coach of the U-19 team of the ÖFB. On October 10, 2017, he succeeded Willi Ruttensteiner as sports director of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB). His first task was to draw up a list of candidates to replace the outgoing team boss Marcel Koller . The decision that Franco Foda will succeed, however, was made by the Presidium of the ÖFB, in which Schöttel has a seat but no voting rights.
