Peter Wende

Peter Wende (born March 17, 1936 in Athens , † July 26, 2017 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German historian .

After graduating from high school in Lemgo in 1955 , he studied history, English and politics at the University of Hamburg , the University of Leicester and the University of Frankfurt am Main from 1955 to 1962 . In 1965 he was at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Frankfurt with a thesis on the spiritual states and their resolution in the judgment of contemporary journalism Dr. phil. PhD. In 1972 he completed his habilitation in Faculty 8 (History) with the work Radikalismus im Vormärz. Investigations into the political theory of early German democracy . His academic teacher was Otto Vossler . From 1972 to 1994 Wende was Professor of Modern German History at the University of Frankfurt am Main. From 1994 to 2000 he was director of the German Historical Institute in London (DHIL). There he initiated a major edition project on legation reports by British diplomats from the German states in the 19th century.

His main research interests were German and English history in modern times. The focus was on the times of upheaval. He dealt with the era of the French Revolution, radicalism in the Vormärz , the English revolutions of the 17th century, the relationship between reform and revolution, the revolutions in history from the early modern period to the present, and the rise and fall of the British Empire.
