Peter Wirth (Byzantinist)

Peter Karl Friedrich Wirth (born March 2, 1930 in Munich ) is a German Byzantinist .

Life

Peter Wirth studied Byzantine Studies at the University of Munich and was established in 1960 with the dissertation studies the Byzantine rhetoric of the twelfth century: With special reference to the writings of Archbishop Eustathius of Thessalonica doctorate . He then worked until his retirement in 1995 as a research assistant (most recently in the rank of Academic Director) at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Here he worked for the publication of the corpus of Greek documents of the Middle Ages and modern times .

In addition to central publications on the Byzantine regests and on Eustathios of Thessalonike (collected in Eustathiana , Amsterdam 1980), Wirth is particularly well known for his monograph Basics of Byzantine History (Darmstadt 1976. 2nd edition 1989. 3rd edition 1997. 4th unchanged edition 2006) , as editor of the Reallexikons der Byzantinistik (one volume in six issues, Amsterdam 1968–1972, afterwards publication ceased) as well as through numerous articles.
