Peter Woeste

Peter Woeste (born March 21, 1959 in Werdohl ) is a German diplomat. He wrote the first German-language travel guide about Mongolia. From 2011 to 2016 he was Ambassador to Malawi, from 2016 to 2019 Ambassador to Rwanda.

Life

After graduating from high school , Woeste studied law at the Philipps University of Marburg . He was reciprocated in the Corps Hasso-Nassovia in 1978 and distinguished himself as a senior . As an inactive , he moved to the University of Lausanne . He completed his studies with the two state law exams. In the meantime he worked as a journalist for various daily newspapers. In 1986 he was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD .

career

After joining the Foreign Service and passing his career examination, he was permanent representative of the Ambassador to Mongolia from 1991 and 1994 . He was one of the first to tour the country after the end of communism and the opening up to the West in the early 1990s. The first German-speaking travel guide to Mongolia was created in 1995 from the experiences and impressions gained from this. The new edition from 2011 received an award from the International Tourism Fair Berlin (ITB BuchAwards), meanwhile the 5th edition has been published.

After his return from Ulaanbaatar in 1994 he first became a consultant in the Humanitarian Aid Task Force at the Foreign Office and then from 1997 to 2001 press officer at the embassy in South Africa . After that, he worked again in the Foreign Office as deputy head of the German International Personnel Policy working group until 2005 and then organizer of the conference on natural disasters under the auspices of the United Nations . Between 2006 and 2008 Woeste was Deputy Head of the Economic Department at the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York City and subsequently Head of Division in the United Nations Department of the Foreign Office. As a freelance journalist, he processed the experience he gained in the USA in two books.

From 2011 to 2016 Woeste was the successor to Rainer Müller as ambassador to Malawi . From September 2016 he was ambassador to Rwanda . In April 2019, he was expelled from Rwanda after the Rwandan secret service intercepted an email from Woestes criticizing Rwandan President Paul Kagame .

Since June 2019 he has been working as Diplomat in Residence at the German Institute of Global and Area Studies in Hamburg .
