Phil Brown (actor)

Philip Mortimer Brown (born April 30, 1916 in Cambridge , Massachusetts , † February 9, 2006 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Brown, son of a doctor, studied acting at Stanford University . He graduated from here in 1937 and worked at the Group Theater of New York from 1938 . He had his first role as a dancer on Broadway in "Everywhere I Roam" . He also played in political cabaret. He supported the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War and organized a rally in Madison Square Garden to support the Soviet Union during World War II . Since 1941 he played various supporting roles in Hollywood films . In 1952 he ended up on the Hollywood blacklist because of his political views . That is why he went into exile in Britain in 1953, where he stayed until 1993. In the UK he has worked in theater, movies and television . Probably his best-known role is that of Owen Lars , uncle of Luke Skywalker , in the classic Star Wars (1977).

Phil Brown was married to Virginia Brown from 1940 until his death, the couple had one son. He died in February 2006 at the age of 89 of complications from pneumonia.
