The Cologne Philharmonic is a concert hall opened in 1986 in the building complex of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne . The "KölnMusik Betriebs- und Servicegesellschaft mbh" under the direction of the artistic director Louwrens Langevoort is responsible for the concert operations . KölnMusik GmbH is funded 90 percent by the City of Cologne and 10 percent by West German Broadcasting .

The building complex emerged from a competition won by the Busmann + Haberer architectural team in the early 1980s .

Construction

The concert hall

The concert hall was modeled on an amphitheater in order to obtain the perfect room acoustics . There are no walls in the entire hall that are parallel to each other, so that there is no unwanted echo. The size and upholstery of the seats are designed so that the sound attenuation they produce is always constant, regardless of whether someone is sitting on them or not.

The column-free interior offers space for up to 2,000 people. The wide-span girders required as a result also cause a problem: the concert hall is located below the publicly accessible Heinrich-Böll-Platz between the Museum Ludwig and the stairs to the bank of the Rhine. Step noises from pedestrians with pumps or driving noises from skateboards or wheeled suitcases are transmitted into the interior of the concert hall by the swinging girders. One of the reasons given for this is a faulty floor covering. For this reason, the square is guarded during the performances and rehearsals in the Philharmonie, so that no acoustic impairment can be felt in the concert hall. This leads to costs of currently around 100,000 euros per year, the total costs for this security until 2015 were an estimated 1,670,000 euros.

organ

The organ was not included in the original construction plan of the Cologne Philharmonic. The Klais organ building workshop in Bonn was only subsequently commissioned to build an instrument for the concert hall. Nevertheless, with its seven round towers, it blends harmoniously into the hall and thus forms the counterpart to the opposite spiral staircase .

The composition of its individual registers ( disposition ) takes into account the requirements of a concert organ: It can sound as a solo instrument as well as serve as accompaniment or assert itself against an orchestra. The organ of the Cologne Philharmonic has three manuals and originally (1986) had 70 stops with a total of 5,394 pipes as well as a mechanical action and electronic couplings . After the registration changes in 2009 and 2010, the organ currently has 67 registers .

In addition to the actual swell mechanism, the substation positioned under the mechanical console can also be swelled separately, although the visible prospect pipes of the substation (Praestant 8 ′ C to g 0 plus 10 silent pipes) lie outside this swell mechanism.

Thanks to the mobile console, which can be moved to the middle of the podium, the organist does not remain invisible behind the Rückpositiv . Thierry Mechler has been titular organist since 2002 .

In 2009 this organ was rearranged to 66 instead of the previous 70 stops. A number of registers were completely replaced by newly made registers. The purpose of this measure was to adapt the organ's sound to today's listening habits and the music-making practice of today's organists.

In addition, the very powerful Tuba 8 'high pressure register was added in 2010, which can be coupled to every manual and also the pedal.

Here is the new disposition of this organ from 2010 with now 67 registers:

Concerts

The opening day of structure (14 September 1986) was the Rhenish Symphony of Robert Schumann started. Since then, mainly works of classical music , the great works of the symphonic and chamber music repertoire, new music , jazz as well as folk and pop music have been performed . The approximately 400 concerts a year are attended by around 600,000 guests. The Cologne Philharmonic is the largest venue of the eight bridges | music festival that has been held annually since 2011 Music for Cologne . In the 2019/2020 season, the Cologne Philharmonic will host the FELIX festival for the first time ! dedicated to historical performance practice.

KölnMusik GmbH had a budget of around 15.3 million euros available in 2016 to carry out its own and third-party concert events, 33.2 percent of which had to be covered by municipal subsidies. This results in a subsidy requirement of around 8 euros per ticket, which means that the Cologne Philharmonic has a small subsidy requirement compared to other Cologne cultural institutions.

The Cologne Philharmonic is the seat of the Gürzenich Orchestra and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne .

North-south tunnel of the light rail

The north-south tunnel of the Cologne Stadtbahn , which was still under construction in 2009, runs two meters below the concert hall. During the construction of the Philharmonic, a preliminary construction work was created, namely walls in the subsoil, between which the tunnel was dug. At the end of May 2009, vibration tests were carried out to simulate the noise generated by the trains that would later run every minute under the concert hall and the recording studio of the WDR. According to the intendant Louwrens Langevoort , the tests were unsatisfactory. Even on the fourth night's attempt in the concert hall, "a noise" could still be heard.
