Philipp Jakob Loutherbourg the Younger (born October 31, 1740 in Strasbourg , † March 11, 1812 in Chiswick near London; also Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg ) was a British-French painter , etcher and aquatint engraver.

Life

Loutherbourg was the son of the engraver Philipp Jakob Loutherbourg the Elder , from whom he also received his first artistic lessons. In autumn 1764 Loutherbourg went to Paris , where he became a student of Francesco Casanova , Charles André van Loo and Johann Heinrich Tischbein . With the support of his teachers, Loutherbourg was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1768 and later also a member of the Art Academy of Marseille .

In 1771 Loutherbourg was brought to London by the actor David Garrick at the Theater Royal Drury Lane . There he developed a rich activity as a stage painter and soon gained an important reputation as a painter. In 1781 he became a member of the Royal Academy . In 1795 he introduced William Turner to oil painting.

Loutherbourg was a supporter and friend of Alessandro Cagliostro . He died on March 11, 1812 in Chiswick near London.

His engravings, including depictions of peasants (6 sheets), depictions of soldiers (12 sheets), The Times of the Day (1 sequence, 4 sheets), as well as single sheets with landscapes, navies, animal pieces and caricatures etc. are very much appreciated.
