Philipp Oehmke

Philipp Oehmke (* 1974 ) is a German journalist and author .

Life

Raised in Bonn, Philipp Oehmke studied German in Hamburg and was a trainee at Tempo magazine for two years . In 2001 Oehmke graduated from Columbia University , New York's Graduate School of Journalism , with a Master of Science degree. From 2002 to 2006 he was an editor at the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung , where he also published the 50-volume book series SZ-Diskothek. In 2006 he moved to the cultural department of the news magazine Der Spiegel as an editor . Oehmke has headed the news magazine's New York office since 2015.

Oehmke is the author of the biography In the beginning was the noise about the rock band Die Toten Hosen . The book was published in 2014 and was in the top ten of the Spiegel bestseller list for several weeks.

On June 11, 2020, Oehmke wrote the SPIEGEL article "The time of neutrality is over". He triggered a counter-speech from SPIEGEL's capital correspondent Florian Gathmann, published only hours later ("We have to be as neutral as possible").
