Philipp Paulitschke, Edler von Bruges (born September 24, 1854 in Cermakowitz , Moravia , † December 11, 1899 in Vienna ) was an Austrian explorer .

biography

Between 1872 and 1876 Paulitschke studied geography , natural and linguistic sciences , especially oriental studies, in Graz and Vienna . In 1877 he became a teacher at the grammar school in Znojmo and in 1880 professor at the grammar school in Hernals , and finally in 1889 at the Josefstadt in Vienna. In 1883, at the same time as he was at the school, he became a lecturer in geography and ethnography at the university.

Paulitschke traveled almost all of Europe , Egypt and Sudan . Philipp Paulitschke explored Egypt and Nubia in 1880 and between 1884 and 1885 with Dominik Kammel Edler von Hardegger (1844–1915) the Somal and Galla countries of Harar . During this time he discovered the natural wonder of Alêjo-Dible and named it Franz-Josefs-Schlucht . In 1887 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Philipp Paulitschke died on December 11, 1899 in Vienna. In 1936 the Paulitschkegasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
