Philipp van Almonde (born December 29, 1644 in Brielle ; † January 6, 1711 in Leiden ) was a Dutch "Luitenant-Admiraal" who served in the long naval wars against Britain and France in the 17th and 18th centuries.

He learned the service at sea under his uncle, the frigate captain Kleidyk. In the second Anglo-Dutch War (1665–1667), as commander of the Dordrecht liner , he distinguished himself in the naval battle of 11-14 June 1666 , where Admiral de Ruyter defeated the British fleet under General Monck .

In 1672 Almonde freed Admiral Ruyter (Solebay), who was trapped by the enemy, in the following year as Rear Admiral (October 6, 1673), commanding the fleet off Goeree , and on June 4, 1676, fought the Swedes in a sea battle in the Baltic Sea. After De Ruyter's death in the Mediterranean in 1676, he led the fleet back to Holland. He became vice admiral in 1684.

Almonde earned his greatest fame in the War of the Palatinate Succession , as leader and admiral lieutenant (since March 28) of a squadron in the battle of La Hougue on May 29, 1692, where he actually decided Admiral Edward Russell's victory over the French under Admiral Tourville .

Almonde took part as commander of a Dutch squadron consisting of 14 ships of the line, 3 frigates and 2 lightships in the bombing of Copenhagen in July 1700 and the subsequent cover of the Swedish landing operation at Humlebaek . On Almonde's advice, during the War of the Spanish Succession , the British Admiral George Rooke attacked the richly laden Spanish galleons that came from the West Indies and were covered by French ships of the line, and destroyed the enemy fleet in the sea ​​battle at Vigo on October 23, 1702. Four ships of the line and six galleons were captured by the English, six warships and five richly laden galleons by the Dutch. In 1705 he took part in the siege of Barcelona .

Almonde later retired to his Haaswyk estate near Leiden , where he died on January 6, 1711. His monument is in the Katharinenkirche in Briel.
