Philipp von Rosenberg (* around 1460; † February 4, 1513 in Udenheim, today's Philippsburg ) was - sometimes under the varying name of Philipp I von Rosenberg - from 1504 to 1513 Prince-Bishop of Speyer .

Life

Origin and career

Philipp von Rosenberg came from the Frankish noble family von Rosenberg . His father was Erasmus von Rosenberg and his mother Margarethe née von Helmstatt . Erasmus von Rosenberg was bailiff von Uffenheim in the service of the Principality of Ansbach and founded the line of the Rosenbergs to Uttenhofen . The "von Helmstatt" family were also a Franconian noble family. Both families belonged to the knightly canton of Odenwald .

In 1479 the young man studied in Heidelberg and became Canon of Worms. In 1480/81 he continued his studies in Ingolstadt, where he was awarded a Dr. decretorum (= canon law). In 1480 Rosenberg received a canon in Speyer. His uncle, Bishop Ludwig von Helmstatt , was appointed vicar general of Speyer in 1490 , provost of the St. German monastery in Speyer in 1492 , and cathedral singer in 1495 .

Bishop of Speyer

Bishop Ludwig von Helmstatt died on August 24th, 1504 and Philipp von Rosenberg was elected his successor on September 6th of the same year, the papal confirmation took place on November 8th, 1504, he received the episcopal ordination on February 9th, 1505.

In retrospect, at the end of the 19th century, Canon Sigmund Joseph Zimmer described the bishop as “pious but very sickly” and he continues: “A learned, but exceptionally simple and thrifty man. In 17 still existing letters he fought the grievances among clergy and lay people and had a diocesan agenda printed by Peter Drach in Speyer. "

The "Mount of Olives" built under Bishop von Rosenberg next to the Speyer Cathedral .

Under Bishop Philipp von Rosenberg, the artistically very valuable "Mount of Olives", a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, was built in 1509 in the middle of the cloister south of the cathedral. The cloister went under in the town fire of 1689, the "Mount of Olives" exists (damaged) to this day.

From 1510, Bishop von Rosenberg used Canon Philipp von Flersheim , who later became bishop, as his envoy, who in this capacity took part in the Diets of Trier and Cologne in 1512 . From 1507 he appointed the learned humanist Thomas Truchseß von Wetzhausen as his vicar general.

Bishop Philipp von Rosenberg had a diocesan agendas published in 1512 with a pastoral theological part - as mentioned in Zimmer - and warned the diocesan priests to adapt to the cathedral clergy in the breviary and not to deviate from the diocesan rite and the diocesan customs in the liturgy . He obliged the clergy to purchase the Speyer liturgical books, especially the breviary printed in Venice on behalf of the bishop .

According to the capital book of Albrecht von Rosenberg zu Boxberg, Bishop Philipp von Rosenberg settled disputes in the family circle between the brothers Friedrich and Arnold von Rosenberg over the estate of Jörg von Rosenberg in 1507.

The noble Hartung Fuchs von Dornheim († 1512) was his court master and confidante in government matters. He also sent him to the Augsburg Reichstag in 1510 as his representative.

Bishop Philipp I von Rosenberg died - only 53 years old - in Udenheim in 1513. He was buried in the cloister of the Speyer Cathedral.

coat of arms

The prince-bishop's coat of arms is usually quartered . The fields of the coat of arms alternate with the von Rosenberg family coat of arms, red and silver rectangles that are arranged alternately, and the coat of arms of the diocese of Speyer, a silver cross on a blue background.
