Physalis longifolia is a plant type from the genus of jujubes ( Physalis ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Physalis longifolia is a perennial, 20 to 60 centimeter high plant that grows from a strong rhizome located deep underground . The stems grow upright and are heavily branched in the upper part of the plant. The plant is hairless or sparsely hairy with short, simple, close-fitting trichomes up to 0.5 millimeters long . The leaf blades are ovate to ovate-lanceolate or broadly lanceolate. They become 2.5 to 10 (rarely up to 13) centimeters long and 1 to 6 (rarely up to 7) centimeters wide. They are hairless or sparsely haired with short, curly-haired trichomes. The leaf margin is whole or roughly serrated with a few teeth, the base is cut off or rounded, the leaf blade is pointed towards the front. The leaf stalks are about one to two fifths the length of the leaf blade.

The flowers stand individually in the axils of the leaves. The flower stalk measures 5 to 20 millimeters. During the flowering period, the calyx is 7 to 12 (rarely 5 to 15) millimeters long and sparsely covered with curly-haired, short, close-fitting trichomes. The calyx lobes are 3 to 6 millimeters long. The crown measures 10 to 20 millimeters, is colored yellow and has five purple-brown spots in the crown throat. The anthers are yellow or blue tinged and 2 to 4 millimeters long. The stamens are as wide or wider than the anthers.

The calyx, which is greatly enlarged when the fruit is ripe, is green, the cross-section is ten-angled, rounded or only slightly indented at the base. It measures 2 to 4 millimeters in length and 1.5 to 3 centimeters in width. The stem extends to 15 to 35 millimeters.

The flowering period extends from May to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Occurrence

The species occurs in different areas of the USA. The variety Physalis longifolia var. Longifolia is mainly known from the Ozark plateau and the valley of the Arkansas River , specimens were collected in the states of Arkansas , Mississippi , Missouri , Oklahoma and Texas . Physalis longifolia var. Subglabrata is common in all states in the southeastern United States, also occurs in Illinois , Indiana , Missouri, New Jersey , Ohio , Oklahoma and Pennsylvania .

Systematics

Within the genus of the bladder cherries ( Physalis ), the species is classified in the section Lanceolatae of the subgenus Rydbergis .

There are two varieties that differ both morphologically and in terms of distribution:
