Physarum is a genus of slime molds from the Myxogastria group , of which it is the largest genus with over 100 species. Around two thirds of the species of the genus arelimitedin their distribution to the Neotropics .
features
The often conspicuously colored fruiting bodies are sporocarp to plasmodiocarp , only rarely approximately aethaliform . A columella can be present or be absent. The peridium, which is almost always more or less covered with calcareous nodules, has one or two layers, rarely three layers.
The scalp consists of calcareous nodules that are connected to one another by transparent, sometimes hollow threads and anchored to the peridium and the attachment of the sporocarp. A Pseudocolumella may be present or absent.
The lime nodules are always grainy, but can crystallize when wet and dried again.
distribution
The genus is distributed worldwide, but around two thirds of the species are neotropical. Many of their species are common in their respective distribution areas.
