Pia Wunderlich (born January 26, 1975 in Bad Berleburg ) is a former German soccer player . She has played in the Bundesliga and for the women's national team since 1993 .

Club soccer

Pia Wunderlich started at TuS Schwarzenau when she was seven. Together with her sister Tina she played in the boys team there. In 1989 she moved to the women's team at TSV Battenberg . With this club, she rose to the Bundesliga in 1992. In 1993 she moved to 1. FFC Frankfurt .

Her first international match was against Russia in 1993 . After sporadic appearances, she became a regular in 1996. The midfielder was considered dangerous, dribbling and fast. From 1999 to 2000 she had to cope with many failures. At first she suffered from glandular fever and had to take a year off. As soon as she recovered, she contracted the thyroid gland , and shortly afterwards she had to undergo knee surgery.

Pia Wunderlich won at the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 bronze medal. In 2005 she became European champion with the national team for the third time.

In 2005, Pia Wunderlich got involved with people with Down syndrome (trisomy 21) by participating in a poster campaign run by the “German Down Syndrome InfoCenter”. On the posters and postcards published in October 2005, she can be seen together with her soccer colleague Silke Rottenberg and Marco Huber, a hobby soccer player with Down syndrome, in the senior men's team of TV 1921 Nieder-Klingen. The motto of the picture series is: “People with Down syndrome make strange movements. Like anyone who tries to play a difficult ball. ”Since August 1st, 2008, she has been the coordinator of the girls' football boarding school of the FLVW at the Kaiserau sports school . Since June 2015 she has been the trainer of the third team of SG Bad Soden , an inclusion team that plays in the district league C Schlüchtern West.
