Pier Carlo Padoan (actually Pietro Carlo Padoan , spoken [padoˈan]; born January 19, 1950 in Rome ) is an Italian economist and politician. From February 2014 to June 1, 2018 he was Italian Finance Minister . Before that, he worked for the International Monetary Fund and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development , among others .

Life

Padoan comes from a family that lived in Veneto and then moved to Rome via Turin . Pier Carlo Padoan spent part of his school days in Canada . He graduated from La Sapienza University in Rome with a degree in economics and then embarked on an academic career. Until 2007 he taught at universities in Rome, Bruges , Warsaw , Brussels , Urbino , La Plata and Tokyo .

From 1998 to 2001 Padoan was economic policy advisor to the Prime Ministers Massimo D'Alema and Giuliano Amato . From 2001 to 2005 he was responsible for southern European countries at the IMF. On June 1, 2007, he was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the OECD, and on December 1, 2009, also its Chief Economist. At the end of 2013 he was appointed head of the statistical office Istituto Nazionale di Statistica , but remained in the service of the OECD until his appointment as Italian finance minister.

Padoan did not belong to any political party until the beginning of 2018. In the general election in Italy in 2018 , he ran for the Socialist Partito Democratico and won a parliamentary seat .
