Pierre Augustin Dangeard

Pierre Augustin Dangeard , full name Pierre Clément Augustin Dangeard (born November 23, 1862 in Ségrie in the Sarthe department , † November 10, 1947 in Ségrie ), was a French botanist and mycologist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ PADang. "

Live and act

Dangeard was born on November 23, 1862 in the small parish of Ségrie. He was the only child of Pascal Francois Dangeard (1822–1863) and his wife Augustine Desiree, née Gallais (1837–1906). Since his father died early, Pierre Augustin Dangeard grew up only with his mother.

He received his basic school education in the École voisine in Ségrie. However, his academic performance seems to have been so good that he was granted access to the teachers' seminar in Alençon , 30 kilometers away . At the École Normale d'Instituteur there , a type of pedagogical college created after Napoleon's school reforms , he completed teacher training from 1878 to 1881.

After completing his studies, Dangeard initially stayed in the Orne department and worked as a teacher, first in Chanu , then in Flers and finally as a professor at the Collège von Domfront . In addition to his job, he learned Latin from a village priest - at that time a prerequisite for access to higher education. He then completed his baccalaureate and went to Caen as a Licencié . Here he studied biology at the natural science faculty. After graduating in 1883, he stayed at the faculty as a scientific assistant for botany. In 1886 he graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences in Paris with a doctorate in sci. PhD. He then took over the position of chef des travaux pratiques in Caen and headed the botanical laboratory.

In 1891 Dangeard moved to the Faculty of Science in Poitiers as a lecturer - from 1894 professor - for botany . Well established and relatively secure, he married the 20-year-old Henriette Louise Labrosse, daughter of an admiral, in September 1892. The young family stayed in Poitiers until 1908 and Dangeard and his wife had four children during that time. The eldest son Henri was born in 1893. The second son, Pierre Jean Louis, followed in 1895. In 1896 the daughter Anne Marie Augustine was born and in 1898 the son Louis Marie Bernard followed. The following year, the eldest son Henri died, five years later Dangeard's wife Henriette Louise also died in 1904.

In 1909 Pierre Augustin Dangeard moved again, this time to the Faculty of Natural Sciences in Paris . Here he was assistant professor until 1923. When the professor of the botany institute at the renowned Sorbonne , Gaston Bonnier , died unexpectedly in December 1922, Dangeard was appointed to the chair. The ambitious and successful scientist stayed at the Sorbonne until his retirement in 1934. Pierre Augustin Dangeard died on November 10, 1947 at the age of 84.

His two sons Pierre Jean Louis Dangeard and Louis Marie Bernard Dangeard also embarked on a scientific career. The older Pierre, with the official botanical author abbreviationPJLDang. “, Followed in his father's footsteps, also became a botanist and researched marine algae . His brother Louis was an oceanographer and geologist . He held the Chair of Geology at the Faculty of Science in Caen. Nothing is known about the career of the daughter Anne Marie Augustine.

Remarks

The fact that father and son Dangeard, as botanists working with algae, both had the same first name, namely Pierre , caused much confusion even among experts. Pierre Augustin Dangeard foresaw the naming problem. He tried to counter this on the occasion of the publication of Pierre Dangeard's doctoral thesis in the journal Le Botaniste , of which he was editor:

" Je suis heureux de présenter aujourd'hui dans cette série 15 you Botaniste un mémoire de mon fils ainé, dont les travaux comme celui-ci ultérieurs porteront la signature Pierre Dangeard , alors que les ont toujours été miens PRESENTES sons la signature PA Dangeard  : de la sorte, aucune confusion ne pourra se produire dans l'esprit des lecteurs. "
(I am pleased to present in this 15th edition of the Botaniste a treatise by my older son whose future work, like this one here, will appear under the name of Pierre Dangeard , while my [own work] will always be under the name of PA Dangeard have been published: in this way there can be no confusion on the part of the reader.)
