Pierre Charles Edmond Jabouille

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pierre Charles Edmond Jabouille , mostly Pierre Jabouille (born November 25, 1875 in Saintes , Département Charente-Maritime ; † May 15, 1947 in the 16th arrondissement in Paris ) was a French ornithologist , colonial administrator in Indochina and since 1935 a member of the editorial board of the journal L ' Oiseau et la revue française d'ornithologie .

Live and act

He was the son of the judge and later chairman of the cabinet of the prefecture in the Calvados department Louis Arthur Jabouille (1842-1887) and Emma Jenny nee. Lejeune (1855-).

After studying law , Pierre Jabouille first led the sub-prefecture of Barcelonnette . But this life did not fulfill him and so he moved to Indochina in 1905 , where he started a remarkable career as an administrative officer. In various positions he got to know the country and its areas. So he lived in Lào Cai and Quảng Trị . He has also served as the Mayor of Hanoi , Director of the Office of Governor General Martial Merlin , Political Affairs Inspector in Annam, and Commissioner of Guangzhouwan China . His diplomatic skills eventually led to his attaining the rank of governor.

Most of the expeditions that Jean Théodore Delacour made in this area between 1923 and 1933 accompanied Jabouille. Occasionally her old English friend Willoughby Prescott Lowe (1872–1949) also went on a research trip. His knowledge of the local fauna was of enormous value to the success of the expeditions.

In Huế , Jabouille also had a considerable library, which was not limited to zoology, as he was also interested in art, history and archeology. He was also the main organizer and sponsor of the Hue Museum. He published most of his ornithological books and treatises with Delacour.

Delacour knew Jabouille in 1923 only from hearsay or through bird hides , which he sent to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle . When Delacour was invited to Indochina by Merlin after the end of 1923, their paths crossed for the first time. Jabouille had received the order to receive him in Hanoi. At that time he lived in Quảng Trị, an area that Delacour really liked. Both became friends immediately and so they collected together in the winter and spring of 1924 or studied other ornithological collections. After an eight-year absence from France, he returned to France in 1924 to take a vacation in Clères . But in the following year they met again to collect in Indochina to explore other regions of the country. They continued this ritual between Clères and Indochina until 1933, the year in which Jabouille was retired.

After retiring, Jabouille took a room in the Château de Clères and continued to study his Indochinese bird hides with Delacour. In the 1940s, tropical colonial life took its first health toll. In 1940 the two friends parted ways and they only met again in Clères after the Second World War . When they met again in Paris in May 1947, Jabouille was already marked by imminent death. He died quickly after Delacour's return to Clères.

Memberships

Since 1925 he was a member of the British Ornithologists' Union . Since September 11, 1925 he was a member of the Siam Society .
