Pierre Dørge (born February 28, 1946 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish composer and jazz guitarist.

Live and act

As a teenager, Dørge and his first group won prizes in the jazz competitions of Danish Radio. In the late 1960s, the guitarist dealt with experimental music and was a member of John Tchicai's Cadentia Noca Danica . Ellington sounds and free jazz , African music and contemporary compositions formed the basis for the work in his quartet Thermaenius , founded in 1978 , to which the percussionist Marilyn Mazur and his wife, the keyboardist Irene Becker , belonged. He continued to play as a jazz guitarist in small groups with Walt Dickerson , Johnny Dyani , John Stevens , Khan Jamal and other jazz musicians.

In 1980 he founded the New Jungle Orchestra , which he still leads today. This big band with musicians from different countries in Europe, Africa and America is one of the most original and constant European large formations in the field of jazz; he included, for example, Marilyn Mazur, Harry Beckett , Johnny Dyani, John Tchicai , Jesper Zeuthen and Hamid Drake . David Murray ( The Jazzpar Prize , 1991) and Ray Anderson (2004) also performed as guest soloists . For the orchestra's repertoire, Dørge was inspired by jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington, Ornette Coleman , Charles Mingus , but also by Frank Zappa , Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky, as well as by ethnic musical cultures, Arabic, West and South African and Balinese music. From 1993 to 1996 the band represented Denmark as a “state ensemble” and played as a kind of “cultural ambassador” in front of Nelson Mandela , but also in Brazil, China and Australia.

Dørge also composed the music for the Swedish children's series Eva and Adam with Irene Becker . He also composed the opera “Chinese Compass”, which premiered in 1998 at the “Aarhus International Art Festival”.
