Pierre Gasly (born February 7, 1996 in Rouen ) is a French racing driver . He won the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in 2013 . He started in the GP2 series from 2014 to 2016 and won the overall standings there in 2016. In 2017 he made his debut in Formula 1 .

Career

Gasly began his motorsport career in karting in 2006 , where he remained active until 2010. Among other things, he finished second in the CIK-FIA-KF3 European Championship and fourth in the World Cup in 2010. In 2011 Gasly entered formula racing . With four wins he immediately came third in the French F4 championship.

In 2012 Gasly switched to R-Ace GP in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . With two third places as the best results, he finished the season in tenth place. With 49 to 78 points he was defeated by Nyck de Vries within the team . In addition, he took part in some races of the northern European Formula Renault for R-Ace GP . He achieved third place. 2013 Gasly stayed in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and received a cockpit at Tech 1 Racing . He won the races in Wolokolamsk , Mogyoród and Le Castellet . With a total of eight podium finishes from 14 races, Gasly won the championship. He prevailed with 195 to 179 points against Oliver Rowland . He also took part in six Alpine Formula Renault races for Tech 1 Racing . Only once did he fail to finish in the top 4 and was in sixth place at the end of the season, although he had not taken part in the majority of the races.

In 2014 Gasly switched to Arden Motorsport in Formula Renault 3.5 . He was also included in the Red Bull funding program. Gasly stood on the podium eight times, but was unable to win. With 192 to 229 points he was defeated by Carlos Sainz jr. , which was also promoted by Red Bull, and reached second place overall. Internally, he prevailed clearly against William Buller , who had scored 30 points. In addition, Gasly entered the GP2 series season for the ninth race weekend . He competed for Caterham Racing . Two eleventh places were his best results and he finished 29th in the drivers' championship. In 2015 Gasly switched completely to the GP2 series and received a cockpit with the DAMS championship team . Two second places were the best results for Gasly, who, unlike his team-mate Alex Lynn, had no win. Gasly finished the season in eighth place in the drivers' championship. He was tied with Lynn, who was sixth overall. In 2016 Gasly took part in the GP2 series for Prema Racing . At the main race at Silverstone , he won his first GP2 race. The success was also his first victory since 2013. In the further course of the season Gasly won other main races in Mogyoród , Spa-Francorchamps and on Yas Island . With 219 to 211 points, he won the championship ahead of his teammate Antonio Giovinazzi .

In 2017 Gasly moved to Japan for Team Mugen in the Super Formula . He won two races and finished second in the drivers' championship. In 2017 Gasly also took part in a race weekend of the FIA Formula E Championship for e.dams. He also remained connected to the Red Bull Formula 1 teams and acted as a substitute driver. At the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix he made his Formula 1 World Championship debut in the Toro Rosso . He initially represented Daniil Kwjat in two races and then succeeded Carlos Sainz jr for the last three races . who left the team during the season. In the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship , Gasly stayed with Toro Rosso. In the second race in Bahrain he scored his first points in Formula 1 in fourth. At the end of the season, he finished 15th overall with 29 points.

For the Formula 1 World Championship in 2019 changed Gasly to Red Bull Racing .

During the summer break following the Hungarian Grand Prix , it was announced that Gasly will be returning to Scuderia Toro Rosso from the Belgian Grand Prix . There he replaced Alexander Albon , who in turn took over Gasly's cockpit at Red Bull Racing. At the Brazilian Grand Prix , he finished second, achieving the first podium of his career. At the end of the season he finished seventh overall with 95 points, which is his best result in Formula 1.

In 2020 he will start again for the team from Faenza , which will now compete under the name Scuderia AlphaTauri and no longer as Scuderia Toro Rosso . After the seventh race, he is currently twelfth in the drivers' standings with 18 points.
