Pierre Michel d'Ixnard initially worked as a carpenter, but also as a bricklayer, stonemason, locksmith and mirror maker and was trained by the Parisian architect Jacques-François Blondel . He followed his teacher Jean Nicolas Servandoni to Stuttgart in 1763.

In the same year, Prince Josef Friedrich Wilhelm von Hohenzollern-Hechingen commissioned him to renovate his residence in Hechingen . It was the first independent commission for d'Ixnard, and he obviously carried it out to the prince's complete satisfaction. In 1764 he was appointed building director of the Principality of Hohenzollern-Hechingen and created the collegiate church, an important building of early classicism.

This work earned him a reputation as a master builder in the Upper Swabian Königseggwald , where he built the Königseggwald Castle for the Count in 1765 and redesigned the outer facade of Aulendorf Castle . He planned the Electoral Palace in Koblenz (1777–1780) for the Elector of Trier . In addition, he also led the renovation of the Ellingen residence (1772–1775) and made the plans according to which the Lords von Speth's city palace in Gammertingen was built.

In addition to the princely residences, d'Ixnard also made a name for himself as a church and monastery architect. From 1767 to 1776 he worked mainly for the Buchau women 's monastery, where he redesigned the monastery buildings and the collegiate church of St. Cornelius and Cyprianus .

One of his greatest and most famous works is the monastery church of St. Blasien, built in 1768 . 1780–83 built d'Ixnard the town and collegiate church of St. Jakob in Hechingen. His redesign of the choir in the Konstanz Minster is still controversial today . His student Johann Joachim Scholl directed the classicistic redesign of the Salem Minster from 1773–1784 , for which the Salem Monastery had initially tried to win d'Ixnard.
