Pierre de L'Estoile

Pierre de L'Estoile (* 1546 in Paris ; † October 8, 1611 ibid) was a French lawyer , writer and chronicler . L'Estoile's diary-like records are one of the most important sources of French history under Henry III. and Heinrich IV.

Life

L'Estoile was born in Paris, where he spent most of his life. He studied in Bourges the rights and served as a royal adviser. In 1601 he retired and began writing his "Memoires-Journaux" , in which he recorded the events of his time (first published in 1621). The work covers the years 1574–1611, lively describes everyday life and criticizes the extreme Catholic party.

He was the father of Claude de L'Estoile .
