Pieter Coecke van Aelst
Pieter Coecke van Aelst (born August 4, 1502 in Aalst , † December 6, 1550 in Brussels ) was a Flemish painter .
Life
Pieter Coecke van Aelst was a pupil of Bernard van Orley . After a study trip to Italy around 1524-25 he joined the St. Luke Guild in Antwerp in 1527 as a master. He is already mentioned in Antwerp for the years 1522–23 and probably worked as a journeyman in the workshop of his future father-in-law Jan van Dornicke (the master of 1518 ). In 1533 a trip to Constantinople follows .
In comparison with his publishing activities, his artistic work has taken a back seat. Also architectural designs and templates for stained glass and tapestries are to come from his hand. In terms of art history, his paintings follow the work of the Antwerp Mannerists . In addition, Pieter Coecke van Aelst distinguished himself as the translator of Sebastiano Serlio , whose third book appeared in Flemish in 1539 and in French in 1545. Pieter Coecke van Aelst was the teacher and father-in-law of Pieter Bruegel the Elder . His second wife, Mayken Verhulst, also worked as a teacher and, after her husband's death, taught his son-in-law to paint watercolors.
