Pietro Lombardo (* around 1435 in Carona on Lake Lugano ; † 1515 in Venice ) was an Italian sculptor and builder. He is possibly identical to the stonemason Pietro da Como .

Life

Lombardo was the son of Martino Lombardo . According to the current state of research, very little is known about Lombardo's early years. At the beginning of 1464 Lombardo settled in Padua and worked there until the middle / end of 1467. Here he created a. a. the magnificent tomb for Antonio Roselli . From the summer of 1474, Lombardo was first mentioned in Venice. There he designed the tombs of the Doges Nicolò Marcello († 1474) and Pietro Mocenigo († 1476) in the church of SS Giovanni e Paolo . In St. Mark's Basilica , Lombardo designed the altars in honor of San Jacopo and San Paolo . In 1479 Giovanni Dario, Secretary of the Senate of the Republic of Venice, commissioned the Palazzo Dario from Lombardo , which was completed by one of his successors in 1487. In 1481 he built the elegant Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi , which is considered a successful example of the early Renaissance . It is considered one of his most important works.

Lombardo was also significantly involved in the construction and design of the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli between 1484 and 1489. He then went to Ravenna with his sons Tullio and Antonio Lombardo , where he a. a. executed the relief on Dante's tomb . Back in Venice, Lombardo created together with his sons and the master builder Giovanni Buora at the Scuola Grande di San Marco . In the spring of 1514, Lombardo was entrusted with the post of head of the stonemasons' guild.

Pietro Lombardo died in Venice in 1515 at the age of about 70.
