Pietro Longhi
Pietro Longhi (born November 5, 1702 in Venice ; † May 8, 1785 ibid) was a painter of the Venetian Rococo . He painted frescoes, altarpieces, portraits and genre scenes from the Venice of his time.
Live and act
Longhi was born to Alessandro and Antonia Falca. He changed his birth name in 1733 when he joined the Venetian Fraglia dei Pittori to the stage name Pietro Longhi. Longhi married Caterina Maria Rizzi in 1732, with whom he had eleven children who, with the exception of three, died early. His only surviving son, Alessandro Longhi , also became a painter. In 1756 he entered the Accademia di pittura e scultura in Venice, where he taught until 1780.
Longhi was initially trained by Antonio Balestra , who came from Verona and was an employee of the Roman Carlo Maratta . Longhi's first pictures, such as the altarpiece in San Pellegrino near Verona, were still influenced by their - late Baroque - influences, as was his first major commission for a member of the Venetian nobility, the fresco in Palazzo Sagredo on the subject of the fall of the giants . The high-ranking families of Venice, such as the Grimani , Querini, Pisani and Manin, would later become his most important clients.
His collaboration with the Bolognese Giuseppe Maria Crespi had a lasting influence on Longhi . Under the impression of Crespis, who had broken away from the traditions of academic painting, experimented with new painting techniques and painted religious themes, such as the Seven Sacraments , as genre scenes , Longhi also turned to genre painting. His conversation pieces with their precise, sometimes humorous or slightly ironic descriptions of Venetian social life are not only a first-rate source for the Venetian cultural and moral history, but are characterized by their precious and delicate colors.
In addition, Longhi painted numerous group and individual portraits of the Venetian nobility.
