Pietro Redondi (* 1950 ) is an Italian historian of science , best known for his theses on the Galileo Galilei case .

Life

Redondi received his doctorate in the history of science in 1978 at the école des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris. From 1981 to 1992 he conducted research for the CNRS at the Center Alexandre Koyré in Paris, and from 1985 to 1990 as deputy director. In 1983 he was at the Institute for Advanced Studies . From 1983 he was assistant professor (Professore Associato) and then full professor for the history of science at the University of Bologna . Redondi is a professor in the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Milan-Bicocca .

In 2012 he was visiting professor for the history of technology at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris.

In his 1983 book, Redondi advocated a controversial new view of the Galileo process. According to this, the main reason for his condemnation was not the advocacy of the Copernican worldview , but earlier his conflict with the Jesuits in his book Il Saggiatore of 1623, in which he advocated an atomic theory that ran counter to the Catholic doctrine of the Lord's Supper . Your report to the Inquisition (anonymously, around 1624, discovered by Redondi in the Inquisition archives) was unsuccessful at the time and the Jesuits would have seen another chance in 1632 (Galileo Trial) when the Pope and the Curia, who had patronized Galileo, passed through the Counter-Reformation came under pressure, especially from the Spanish side. The theses and interpretations of Redondi were mostly rejected by the Galileo researchers.

Redondi also dealt with the Galileo reception and the idealization of Galileo in the 19th century. He also dealt with the Galileo researcher Alexandre Koyré .

From 1983 to 1993 he was the founding editor of History and Technology. In 1985 he received the bronze medal of the CNRS.
