Pihtla (German Pichtendahl ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural community Saaremaa in the Saare district on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . Until 2017, it was the capital of a rural community of the same name .

Population and location

The village has 83 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is 14 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare at the northern end of the Baltic Sea bay Sutu ( Sutu laht ). Immediately east of Pihtla is the village of Püha with its Evangelical Lutheran church.

There is a kindergarten, a primary school and a library in the village.

Good Pihtla

A courtyard was built on the site as early as the Middle Ages. It was initially named Brakelshof after its owners . At the beginning of the 17th century the court was confiscated by the crown due to large debts. In 1630 he was sold to a Friedrich von Budde. The private owner during the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the Swiss cheese manufacturer Albert Jakob Schlup (1851–1929). As a foreigner, his property was not subject to forced nationalization, which primarily affected the goods of the native Baltic Germans .

The single-storey stone mansion was built in the 18th century. In the second half of the 19th century, a neo-Gothic gable and two wooden side buildings were added to the facade .

The manor house and the outbuildings are now only in ruins.
